The Life and Times of Mistress Delicious
early life
Born in the small town of Plymouth, New Hampshire, on December 18, 1778, Delicious was the daughter of a local blacksmith and his wife. When she was just a young child, her parents died in a tragic fire, leaving her an orphan. Delicious was then raised by her grandparents.
As a teenager, Delicious began working as a maid for a wealthy family in Boston. It was during this time that she began to develop her skills as a cook. She soon became known for her delicious meals, which she served to the family’s guests.
In 1802, at the age of 24, Delicious married a wealthy man named Ezekiel Robinson. The couple moved to New York City, where Delicious opened her own catering business. She quickly became one of the city’s most popular caterers, known for her sumptuous meals and beautiful presentation.
Ezekiel Robinson died in 1817, leaving Delicious a widow. She continued to run her catering business, and also began to teach cooking classes. In 1820, she published her first cookbook, The Book of Cookery, which was an instant bestseller.
Delicious continued to run her catering business and cooking school until her death in 1849. She was buried in Plymouth, New Hampshire, next to her parents.
Delicious’s Legacy
