    What is Adware?

Adware is a type of software that displays advertising content on a computer or other device. It is typically installed without the user’s knowledge or consent, and may be difficult to remove. Adware may display advertising in the form of pop-up ads, web banner ads, or in-text ads. It may also collect information about the user’s online activities and send it to third-party advertisers. Adware can be installed on a computer by downloading a freeware or shareware program that includes it as part of the installation. It may also be installed by visiting a website that uses exploits to install it without the user’s knowledge or consent. Adware is often considered to be a type of malware, or malicious software, due to its potential to collect personal information and display unwanted ads. However, not all adware is malicious, and some adware programs may even offer useful features, such as the ability to block pop-up ads.See page

What is a Browser Helper Object?

A Browser Helper Object (BHO) is a DLL file that is loaded automatically by Internet Explorer when the browser starts. BHOs were introduced in IE 4.0 as a way to give third-party developers access to the browser’s internal structure and functionality. There are two types of BHOs: static and dynamic. Static BHOs are registered in the Windows Registry and are loaded each time IE starts. Dynamic BHOs are not registered and are loaded only when a specific action is taken, such as opening a new browser window.

BHOs can be used to add new toolbar buttons, menu items, or context menu items to IE. They can also be used to change the behavior of existing toolbar buttons or menu items. BHOs can also intercept and handle browser events, such as navigation to a new URL or the submission of a form.

Some BHOs are bundled with legitimate software and are installed automatically when the software is installed. Other BHOs are installed without the user’s knowledge or consent, often by adware or spyware. Many BHOs are harmless and provide useful functionality. However, some BHOs are created with malicious intent and can be used to collect personal information, display unwanted advertising, or redirect web browsing to malicious or unwanted websites.

To view the BHOs installed on your system, open IE and click on the Tools menu. Select Manage add-ons from the menu. The Manage Add-ons dialog box will open. Select Toolbars and Extensions from the Show: drop-down list. The list of BHOs installed on your system will be displayed.

If you find a BHO on your system that you do not recognize or trust, you can disable or remove it. To disable a BHO, select it from the list and click the Disable button. To remove a BHO, select it from the list and click the Remove button.
